Scarlett Johansson was born on the 22nd of November, 1984 at New York City New York. She is an American actress/singer whose versatility has won her recognition across many genres - from thrillers and adventure films to period dramas. Johansson is the daughter of a film producer and architect. She was raised by New York City. Her twin brother Hunter were the youngest of four siblings. When she was a kid she was able to begin acting. At 7 years old, she had already auditioned for commercials in a variety of different ways. To improve her acting skills, she joined the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in Manhattan and then she attended the Professional Children's School. Johansson made her debut a film actress in North (1994) aged nine. When she was eight years old, she starred alongside Ethan Hawke on Off-Broadway in Sophistry. Johansson was later seen in Just Cause (1995) but her first breakthrough came with Manny & Lo (1996) a coming-of-age film about orphaned sisters who run away. The Horse Whisperer (2000) the film in which she played a teenager with a deformity due to an accident garnered an acclaim from critics. Then in Ghost World 2001 (as the cynical teenage outcast Rebecca), Johansson gained even more recognition. With the help of her parents Smith was offered her first acting job at the age of six. Smith created a commercial for Dannon. Much like many other new actresses choose to pursue, she decided to build her talents in the theatre. As she was making her stage debut with Wildflower she was also working with various theatre projects in the USA. She was a graduate of her Stonestreet Studios Conservatory of the New York University Tisch School of the Arts.
